AN AMERICAN CENTURY OF ART

Exclusively for Members

An exclusive talk for Members of the Ashmolean

This event is taking place in-person at the Headley Lecture Theatre, and online via Zoom.

Tea and cake will be served in the lecture theatre from 3pm.

Booking is essential.

With Dr Jim Harris, Teaching Curator at the Ashmolean

The Ashmolean, along with six other museums in the US, Brazil and Germany, is taking part in the Collection-in-Residence programme of the Terra Foundation for American Art.

The Museum was asked to select objects from the Foundation’s holdings to put alongside our own collection as a resource for teaching and research in American art history.

Dr Jim Harris, Teaching Curator at The Ashmolean, will explore this extraordinary loan of 37 works on paper, ranging from the delicate etchings and aquatints of Mary Cassatt through to the social realist art of the Ashcan and 14th Street schools, the government-commissioned work of the New Deal-era Federal Arts Project, and the new abstraction of the post-war period.

As well as discussing the works themselves, this talk will touch on ways in which they illuminate the Museum’s other important holdings of 20th-century American works on paper.

This talk will be recorded and this will be shared with ticketholders following the event.
